I hired my first team member today. Her name is Kara and she’s an intern for the Home editor right now. She’s been at Redbook as an intern for two semesters now.
I picked her up for my entry-level position. I need a senior editor too, but wanted to fill this spot first.
And it was so much fun to make her the offer, I wish I got to do that every day.
I told her the salary I was offering and she had a sort of blank look on her face and said, “I’m surprised.” And I said, “Suprised good or surprised bad?” And she said, “Good! I expected about $10,000 less than that!” So cute. When she was leaving my office she said, “I promise I am going to make you proud.” It was a delightful experience all the way around. And I felt really good when she said, “I feel like all the hard work has paid off.” Because I love hard workers over flashy workers and it’s great to help one win.

Crap. There went my job. Dilly-dallying doesn’t pay off.
