My sister-in-law needs a new computer. Basically, all she needs is a glorified web browsing and email sending machine. No bells. No whistles. Saving cash is paramount.
Any suggestions?

I’m a big fan of Dell’s, so I’d suggest anything in the Dell Inspiron series. I’ve had an Inspiron Laptop for about 5 years now with a minimum of trouble. I can’t really say so much for the Inspiron Desktops because I don’t have personal experience with them, but if she’s willing to drop a little more change, I’d suggest a Dell Optiplex desktop, as I know for a FACT they are solid; they make up the core of the clients I’ve support for the past couple of years and they’ve always been good performers.
Whatever she gets, I HIGHLY recommend getting the extended 3 year warranty. They cost a little, yeah, but it’s SO worth it. Whatever computer you get, you’re going to have SOME problem with it in a 3 year period, and it ALWAYS pays for itself.

Also tell her to look in the “outlet” section of Dell’s website. You can find some good bargains on refurb/returned/scratch and dent. We’ve bought two desktops and a laptop from there and have had no problems with any of them.

I saw one advertised a week or so ago that was a Dell or a Toshiba for something like $359 or $559. I’m all Macs all the time, but it looked tempting, considering what I need it for a lot of the time.
