Today Damon volunteered to work a voter registration drive for the Obama campaign on the University of Tennessee campus. (I’m not looking to start a political argument here. If you want to discuss Obama’s merits or lack thereof, I will give you Damon’s cell phone number.) I am achy and defeated from the stories he’s telling me now. Some young men felt perfectly free to shout things at him like, “No black man is going to be my president.” Really? I’m not naive. I know people think like that. But it still rocks me back a little to hear they feel free to shout it on a crowded campus without fear of repercussion.

It is especially startling because you think of colleges as places of more enlightenment. Not voting for Obama because of issues isn’t the same as not voting for him because he’s black.
edit–duh, as I state the obvious. You know what I mean. But in addition to having it surprise me that people still think like that, it stuns me that that there is an area where that belief is common enough that people are not shocked at someone yelling it.

Right! First on the point that our universities are supposed to be places of critical thinking. Second, that I shudder when I think of what’s in those guys shriveled little hearts if those are the things they feel comfortable YELLING.

It’s scary alright. I’m torn between being worried he won’t win, and being worried he will win and the secret service is going to be working harder than they ever have before.

That latter crosses my mind from time to time and it makes my stomach hurt.
