Atlanta

I’m feeling homesick for Atlanta today. Last night all I wanted in the world was to go to Taco Mac and have my way with the salsa bar.

Not to mention most of my friends are still there. I’ll bet I could get most of them to go have salsa with me.

What is the name of that cool little neighborhood north of Atlanta? Lake Park? Park Lake? Something else? It’s a bunch of cute, hippie-fied cabanas set around a (surprise!) lake. I always wanted to live there and it bugs me that now I can’t remember the name.

  1. Funny, I’ve been thinking how much I’d love to get out of Atlanta and spend a long weekend in New York. If I have to be this cold, it may as well be up there where there are things to do.
My morning commute often takes me past that Grant Park house you shared with Sarah, so I think of you often.

I was terribly envious of it myself. It sold a couple of years ago; I wonder if it’s still a rental?

      • When we lived there our landlord asked if we were interested in buying, and at a very nice price. But he’d spent so many years doing his own “creative” repairs to things like the wiring that I figured it was a money pit waiting to happen.

  5. I think it’s Pine Lake you’re talking about. Come on down, we’ll go to Taco Mac, then I’ll even go to Ru San’s, as long as I don’t have to eat raw fish wrapped in rice and seaweed. …as good as that sounds.

      • The place I’m thinking about is a funky little area – and speed trap as well – just on the other side of Memorial Drive, with cool little houses around a lake. The whole place has an eccentric feel to it. Sounds like we’re talking about the same place, but have different impressions of it. It’s never struck me as a retirement community.

You can get a nifty little house on the lake for well under $200K. Where else can you do that, you know? It’s a very arty community, really tightly knit.

      • To be sure, spending $200k would have him eating Army Surplus Ramen 24/7 and feeding his dogs the leftover crumbs.
He’d be much, much happier in the $50k-$125k range, which Pine Lake seems to have. I even saw a purple house for sale. I didn’t notice if it had a tennis court.
According to Google Maps, it’s 15 minutes from where he works, which isn’t shabby.

      • The purple one needs a foundation jack put under it. Or it did a few years ago.

      • OTP, but barely.

      • I second that. The houses are cozy and probably not many have any major remodeling. You’d have to work really hard to spend $200K or over there.

      • They are higher now, though. The area has had a lot of new construction that is higher-end, and many have been remodeled now. Still most don’t go over that, but they are higher than they used to be by far.

      • Dagnabbit! I’ll have to wait another couple of years before I can look to buy. Sounds like everything will be way out of range by then.

      • Not necessarily. A friend looked there last year and found several small ones for $110-120. They all needed some work, but they weren’t decrepit or anything like that.

You’re right about the reno money. I think I’d want to do a lot of work. Of course, some of them are priced as to make that a little more realistic. I think the biggest barrier for me would be size. We’re a growing family and after living in NY we’ll be looking for SPACE. Not that we’re looking now. But, you know…

That’s why they have such great living rooms with built-ins and things.
I’ve been in a lot of the houses out there because I keep toying with the idea of moving out there.

  34. Would y’all say that if one had a brother looking for a sub-$200k home on the east side of Atlanta, that one should point said brother towards this area?
    Just speaking hypothetically, of course.

  35. If your brother spends his whole $200k on a house in Pine Lake, he’s not as smart as he looks. He should have lots of change left over.
It depends. It’s not near anything, really. To get to Pine Lake, get on North Decatur Road and keep going. Cross Memorial. Go some more. When you get to Club Drive, take a left into the neighborhood. DO NOT SPEED. Don’t be surprised if all the residents wave at you and Officer Fife stops to ask you your bidness in Pine Lake.
But sure. I’d live there. You can see the stars at night and the air is relatively clean and your neighbors will look after you. Get him to buy the one with the tennis court, that would be best.

  36. To be sure, spending $200k would have him eating Army Surplus Ramen 24/7 and feeding his dogs the leftover crumbs.
He’d be much, much happier in the $50k-$125k range, which Pine Lake seems to have. I even saw a purple house for sale. I didn’t notice if it had a tennis court.
According to Google Maps, it’s 15 minutes from where he works, which isn’t shabby.

  37. I second that. The houses are cozy and probably not many have any major remodeling. You’d have to work really hard to spend $200K or over there.

  39. When we lived there our landlord asked if we were interested in buying, and at a very nice price. But he’d spent so many years doing his own “creative” repairs to things like the wiring that I figured it was a money pit waiting to happen.

  40. I want to hear all about your experiences if you look in that area. I’ve wanted to live there for so long.

  41. So true. Some day we’ll leave and then I’ll boo hoo about losing access to Pana II.

  42. I did not know that, but it makes perfect sense.

  43. The purple one needs a foundation jack put under it. Or it did a few years ago.

  44. A couple of them are plenty big, but only have one bathroom, which isn’t a problem so much, except the bathrooms are oddly located clear across the house from the bedrooms, which I guess isn’t so odd when you consider that when those houses were built, people didn’t hang out in their bedrooms unless they were sleeping. That’s why they have such great living rooms with built-ins and things.
I’ve been in a lot of the houses out there because I keep toying with the idea of moving out there.

  45. I always missed the BBQ and mexican food when I was in NYC, but the Ukrainian food, Cozy Burgers, Brisket sammiches, and 1000 other things that could kill me now always made up for it. I’m planning on heading up that way to visit with some friends in March. Would love to actch up with you guys if you’re going to be around on the weekends.

  50. We looked there before but decided to move intown instead. It’s in a crappy school district, but I hate the GA public school system so much I’ll do just about anything to keep her out of it anyway.
You can get a nifty little house on the lake for well under $200K. Where else can you do that, you know? It’s a very arty community, really tightly knit.

  51. There are several purple ones now.

  52. They are higher now, though. The area has had a lot of new construction that is higher-end, and many have been remodeled now. Still most don’t go over that, but they are higher than they used to be by far.

Wait. There are decent houses in a decent ITP neighborhood in that price range? Really? hmmmm…..

  54. Dagnabbit! I’ll have to wait another couple of years before I can look to buy. Sounds like everything will be way out of range by then.

  55. Not necessarily. A friend looked there last year and found several small ones for $110-120. They all needed some work, but they weren’t decrepit or anything like that.
