Liftoff!

After six months of challenging work, I hit the goal I was hired for today: redbookmag.com. It isn’t perfect, I know. But it’s my baby and I love it. And like any good mother, I’ve already got a long list of things to improve my progeny.

I’m relieved, I’m elated, I’m tired, I’m excited.

On a different note, my laptop went to the hard drive home in the sky. Anyone have any recommendations for a new one? I would like it to be relatively light, PC and competent but not fancy.

  1. Well, if you’re willing to look into the SERIOUSLY lightweight category, Dell’s X-1 series is pretty good, but also pretty pricey. It’s like a machine that can’t quite figure out if it’s a tiny PC or a REALLY big PDA. Either way, it comes out of the box at just under $2k, depending on how you load. And you *REALLY* need to load it to get the most out of it, so estimate $2k even.
Similar in the series is Panasonic’s Toughbook line, especially the ruggedized convertible Laptop/Tablet models. HELLA useful, nigh-upon-indestructible, and running roughly the same power under the hood as the X-1, except for the buck you get a MUCH longer battery life, a slightly bulkier footprint, and a battery life that makes grown men cry (I’ve personally used a Toughbook CF-18 for 9 hours straight on battery life alone). The downside? The price: Double the cost of the X-1.
If you’re looking for something in the “much more reasonably priced” category… I don’t know how much I can help. As far as I’ve seen one laptop is alot like the other there. Sorry.

  4. Just realized I said “battery life” twice for the Toughbook. Well… it was worth saying twice. SERIOUSLY!

  5. Congrats! I haven’t had a chance to play around on it, but the home page looks great. And it’s pink!
